San Diego Padres vs. Colorado Rockies

My 18th and 19th games of the season

Due took lake of photos and time I am doing a combined post for these 2 games against the Padres.

The first was a pitching battle Between Rockies Starting pitcher Jorge De La Rosa and the Padres and former Rockies Eric Stultz.

IMG_4215

Jorge De La Rosa throwing the first pitch to the Padres Chris Denorfia. Who he struck out after Evereth Cabrera ground out he would also strike out Chase Headley.

IMG_4228

Eric Stulzs the did start to bad either he got Charlie Blackmon to ground out, Drew Stubbs struck out and Troy Tulowitzki flew out to right field.

IMG_4233

After 3 complete hitless inning for both the Rockies and the Padres Stubbs got a ball down the 3rd base line for a double to break up the No-No for Stultz. The Padres did have 2 base runners in the 2nd Carlos Quentin walked and he got out at second on a Cameron Maybin hit ball which was a fielder choice and Maybin got on first. He would make the third out after a bad jump on a stolen base attempt and end the inning.

IMG_4235

Stubbs making the turn at first with Eric Young giving him the O.K. to head to second.

IMG_4252

Jorge continued to pitch very well in the 4th still facing the minimum amount of batter to this point 12 up 12 down not with out a base runner but with no hits. The Rockies put together a few hits in the 5th and Jorge got on base because of a Jedd Gyorko error scoring Jordan Pacheco from third to contribute to his cause and get the Rockies on the board 1-0. He did hurt his leg a little running out the play but was O.K. and remained in the game.

IMG_4270

Jorge continued is reign over the Padres through 6 innings. Bud Black removed Stultz in the 7th after Blackmon hit a single scoring D.J. LeMahieu. 2-0 Rockies.

IMG_4274

Nick Vincent came in for the Padres instead of throwing a pitch is first throw was to first base.

IMG_4276

Yonder Alfonso missed the ball and the ball bounced around in foul territory and Blackmon advanced to second.

IMG_4284

Denorfia broke up Jorge’s No-No in the 7th with a double. That was the only hit that Jorge would give up till a single by Todd Hundley in the 8th and he was then removed from the game by Walt Weiss.

IMG_4293

After arguing a strike 3 call in the 8th someone missed his first half inning of the year. Nolan Arenado was tossed from the game.

IMG_4309

LaTroy Hawkins came into the game in the 9th with a slight bit of drama Denorfia started the inning with his 2nd double of the game and only the third hit for the Padres of the game. He later scored Headley single but the Rockies still had a 3-1 lead the third run was in the 8th. tulo scored after a lead off single.

IMG_4311

Cameron Maybin strikes out to end the game and the Rockies won 3-1. What a great game to watch if you are into great pitching and a low amount of hits which does cut down on action and photos because well how many shots can you get of the pitcher pitching!

Now the second game of the series was not as great from the pitching side of things.

IMG_4336

Jordan Lyles started for the Rockies and started with a 5-0 record for the year and has pretty much been the Rockies best starter this year. The Padres decide to prove other wise after a strike out to Denorfia he walked Cabrera and Seth Smith who started for the Padres today in right field. The second out was also a strike out this one to Headley but Alfonso hit a double scoreing both of the walk recipients and giving the Padres a 2-0 lead. The first half inning was played with a pretty good rain coming down.

IMG_4347

It cleared up in the bottom of the 1st and Robbie Erlin started the game for the Padres Charlie Blackmon started the inning with a typical Charlie Blackmon lead off a single with a head first dive into first base. He would get doubled up at second on a Stubbs hit. Then Tulo hit a solo home run to get the Rockies on the board 2-1 Padres.

Now this game I was just extremely tired and did not photograph too much only taking 65 photos all game and considering most of them were the 5 or 6 of each pitcher who started it really was not that many. The Padres continued the 2 run trend in the 2nd and 3rd inning to give themselves a 6-1 lead. Lyles only pitched 3 1/3rd innings giving up 6 runs on 5 hits. Walking 6 striking out 3. he just did not have his stuff tonight and could not find the strike zone. This is what really baffled me because he has been such a consistent and effective pitcher at home and on the road. Patrick Saunders from the post did tweet during the game that Lyles kept looking at his fingers so I wonder if it was a bad grip due to a blister or something to that extent.

The bullpen did do a pretty good job the remainder of the game Chris Martin who pitched the 7th inning for the Rockies did give up a 2 run home run to pinch hitter Carlos Quinten. But Tommy Kahnle finished the 4th and pitched the complete 5th. Matt Belisle pitched the 6th.

IMG_4367

Bud Black removed starter Erlin in the 6th and once again went with Nick Vincent.

The Rockies did get a run in the 4th and 5th off Erlin. Stubbs lead off the 4th with a single and scored on a Carlos Gonzalez sac fly and Justin Morneau after a lead off double scored a Pacheco single in the 5th. After 5 it was 6-3 Padres.

IMG_4373

The Rockies scored 2 more in the 6th on a Gonzalez double scoring Stubbs and Tulo to bring the game within 1 run. The Padres still had a 6-5 lead.

Remember the 2 run home run given up by Martin in the 8th well that gave the Padres a 8-5 lead and that was also the final score.

IMG_4387

The Padres won this one and the series is split 1-1 with 1 more to go on Sunday!

That is it for these 2 I will be at Coors Sunday as well see you there Go Rockies!
